Northeastern University Notable Alumni: A Legacy of Service and Sacrifice

In celebration of its esteemed alumni, Northeastern University has unveiled the POW/MIA Chair in Matthews Arena, a poignant tribute to military members who have gone missing in action or were prisoners of war. The chair bears the words 'You Are Not Forgotten,' a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by these courageous individuals.

One notable alumnus who has contributed significantly to this effort is Neal Finnegan, former chair of the Northeastern Board of Trustees. His tireless dedication to the Veterans Memorial project, along with that of Mark Roehrie, Mo Zell, and Steve Fellmeth, has resulted in a stunning black granite wall that serves as a symbol for students who have sacrificed their lives in service of our country.

This commitment to honoring veterans is not limited to symbolic gestures. Northeastern University invests heavily in the federal government's Yellow Ribbon Program, allocating $2 million annually to help post-9/11 veterans meet the cost of completing or continuing their education. This generosity has enabled qualifying veterans to receive grant aid that covers most, if not all, of their tuition and fees.

Northeastern's dedication to serving those who have served is evident in its Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) program, which was created over a century ago. Today, the Liberty Battalion ROTC, hosted by Northeastern, trains 120 cadets at multiple campuses throughout Boston, making it one of the largest such programs nationwide.

In fact, the United States government first implemented a Student Army Training Corps program at Northeastern during World War I.
